Tell us a little about yourself ~
My artist name is Merlot and I’ve been painting graffiti for over 10 years now. I’m born and raised in Seattle, Washington and have moved to Chicago, Illinois about 2 years ago for love and a job opportunity. By day I’m a Sr. Art Director at a digital agency, and by night a graffiti artist. I love what I do as it enables to me stay creative and travel the world.
What do you like about your medium ~
While I didn’t use Spray Paint on this piece of artwork, spray paint is my preferred medium. It’s quick; something that might take me an hour with brushes, could take me 5 minutes with spray paint.
What is the most challenging part about your medium ~
The fumes. Having to remember to either wear a respirator when painting or dealing with the consequences of the day after “paint hangover."
What is your process like ~
A typical morning before painting is waking up extra early to have a cup of coffee and sketch. To me, the sketch is the hardest part of the process, and it guides the entire look and feel. It’s the part where I’m the hardest on myself and need to find that balance to the letter structure while thinking of new ideas and concepts. Once the sketch is finished, I move on the color selection and try to bring a good range of colors with me to the wall just in case they’re needed. From there, it’s all spur of the moment. I incorporate designs, fades, and adjust the letters based on the canvas and environment i’m working in. The environment plays a huge rule in my end product.
